Level I: OUTPATIENT SERVICES

Outpatient services are for those individuals who have a pattern of misuse of alcohol and/or drugs and meet diagnostic criteria for substance abuse. The goal of this program is to reduce problematic use of alcohol and/or drugs. This is accomplished through an educational counseling approach that focuses on increasing the client’s awareness about his/her relationship with alcohol and/or drugs. It also assists to motivate positive attitudes and behavioral changes in that relationship and increase the client’s ability to make responsible decisions about the use of alcohol and/or drugs in their life.

Treatment addresses major lifestyle, attitudinal and behavioral issues that have the potential to undermine the goals of treatment or to impair the individual’s ability to cope with major life tasks without the use of alcohol or other drugs. The program assists in the development of continuing care plans to avoid further alcohol and other drug problems and referring to other resources for assistance when indicated.

Outpatient is also used for those individuals who have been stepped down from a more intensive level of treatment.

Level II.1 INTENSIVE OUTPATIENT

The Intensive Outpatient program (IOP) is designed for patients who have been diagnosed with alcohol and/or drug abuse/dependence and have been assessed appropriate for this level of care. IOP programs provide 9 or more hours of structured programming per week that consist of counseling and education about substance-related and mental health problems. The client’s psychiatric and medical needs are assessed and addressed through consultation and referral.

This level is used for clients who have been recommended for abstinence-based treatment. The goal is to assist the client’s acceptance and adjustment to having a chronic condition, and introducing the basic building blocks for a chemical free life style. This level of service is appropriate for individuals who have co-occurring needs.

As with all levels of treatment, the length of stay in IOP is variable depending on individual needs and response to treatment.
